Lindsay Lohan on the Y2K Renaissance and Owning Her Famous Red Hair

Movie stars have incredible hair; this we all know. But even by movie star standards, Lindsay Lohan’s locks are the stuff of legend. Among her many silver screen hair moments permanently etched into millennial and Gen Z brains: Cady Heron’s multidimensional layers in Mean Girls, Maggie Peyton’s flaming locks of auburn hair in Herbie Fully Loaded, and Anna Coleman’s rock and roll chunky highlights in Freaky Friday (we’ll circle back to that last look in a bit).

And now, her latest project is putting those famous follicles front and center: The actress has partnered with Nexxus, starring in an ad that pays tribute to some of her most iconic movies (and even sees her resurrecting the impressive Annie Parker accent).

We got the opportunity to ask Lohan about on-set hair tricks, her thoughts on the Y2K renaissance, and how she keeps her famous red hair healthy. Keep reading for more.

On Caring for Her Iconic Hair

“My hair has definitely been a big part of my look throughout my career, and I love how versatile it can be. I’ve gone through so many different styles and colors over the years, and I like that my hair can change to fit different roles and moments in my life. One thing I focus on is keeping it healthy, especially when I’m switching up looks. Hydration and damage repair are key for me, and that’s why I use Nexxus products—they really help nourish and protect my hair when styling. I also love playing up volume and shine, and Nexxus makes it easy to keep both looking their best!”

The Character She’d “Swap” Hair With

“I’d probably choose Ashley from Just My Luck. Her hair was so glamorous and always perfectly styled, which made her feel confident and put-together no matter what was happening around her. Those long, voluminous waves were such a signature look for her, and it’s a style I still love today.”

On Embracing Her Trademark Natural Red

“I’ve always loved my red hair, but I think it did take some time to fully embrace it as one of my trademarks. Growing up, I experimented with different colors and styles for roles, but I always found myself coming back to my natural red. There’s something special about it—it feels uniquely me. Over the years, I’ve learned to really own it and play it up. It’s part of what makes me stand out.”

The Best Hair Trick She’s Learned on Set

“After working on so many different projects with different styles, I’ve learned that just a little bit of hair oil—like the Nexxus Repair & Nourish Ultra Lightweight Hair Oil—can completely transform a look. It adds instant smoothness and shine without weighing my hair down, which is crucial when you’re doing multiple takes or switching up styles throughout the day. It’s such a simple trick, but it really makes all the difference!”

The Haircare Product She Uses Every Day

“I’d have to say the Nexxus Slick Stick. It’s perfect for taming flyaways and keeping my hair sleek and polished, whether I’m wearing it up or down, on set, or out and about. I love how easy it is to use on the go—it helps me keep my hair flawless with zero hassle. It’s definitely my go-to for making sure my hair always looks its best.”

Her Hairstyling Regrets

“The thick highlights from Freaky Friday were fun at the time, but looking back, I probably wouldn’t go for that style again. It was such a trend back then, but my taste has changed, and I prefer a more natural, blended look now.”

Her Favorite Red Carpet Hair Moment

“Definitely the sleek ponytail I wore to the Balenciaga fashion show during Paris Fashion Week. It was such a bold, modern look that really complemented the high neckline of the dress. My hairstylist, Danielle Priano, actually used Nexxus products to create the look! It was sleek and polished, exactly what I wanted for that event.”

On the Y2K Renaissance

“I love that Y2K beauty and style are making a comeback! It was such a fun, playful time for fashion, and I’m excited to see things like shimmery eyeshadow and fun hair accessories making a return. There was this carefree energy to the era that I think people are really embracing again. But if there’s one thing I could leave behind, it’s the over-plucked eyebrows. I went through that phase, and I definitely prefer a fuller brow now.”

On Self-Care As a New Mom

“Self-care has become more important than ever, especially with so much going on. I love taking time for simple things, like a relaxing skincare routine, and I always take care of my hair. I’ve started using the Nexxus Repair & Nourish Ultra Lightweight Hair Oil as an overnight treatment to keep it nourished and healthy—it’s such an easy way to make sure my hair gets the love it needs. It’s also important for me to have quiet moments to recharge, whether it’s yoga, reading, or just spending some downtime with my family. Finding balance is key, and I’ve learned that self-care doesn’t always have to be something big—sometimes, it’s just about those little moments that help me feel grounded and refreshed.”

The Product That Has Never Left Her Beauty Routine

“[It] would have to be a good moisturizer. I’ve always believed that taking care of your skin is the foundation for everything else, and I’ve kept that as a constant in my routine over the years. No matter what makeup or hair products I’m using, having well-hydrated skin is key for me. It’s something I never skip, and it’s been a go-to step since I was a teenager.”

The Trends She’s Most Excited About

“I’m really excited about the resurgence of more natural, effortless beauty trends. I love that people are embracing their natural texture and skin, focusing on enhancing what they have rather than covering it up. I’m especially into the ‘Clean Girl’ look—glowy skin, minimal makeup, and healthy hair. I’m also loving the return of bold lip colors; it’s such a fun way to add a pop to a more understated look.”
