Forget everything you know about fall hair color trends—there’s a blonde brigade that’s switching up the status quo. Autumnal color trends usually call for ambers, chestnut browns, and dark chocolate hues, but a group of Gen-Z muses are making the case for lighter strands this season. Kendall Jenner championed the trend in September, Hailey Bieber went lighter for fall, and now Billie Eilish is joining in on the fun.
In a flurry of fashion and beauty news this morning (Taylor Swift’s wearing gold freckles! Merit has a new fragrance! Savage x Fenty is dropping a collab with Diesel!) was Eilish’s November Vogue cover, where she debuted a big hair transformation. You guessed it: She’s blonde and has a grungy shag cut.

For the past few months, Eilish has stuck to her long glossy chocolate strands. She styled a voluminous blowout at the Academy Awards earlier this spring but often pulls her hair back into ponytails and swept-up styles during her performances. In her Happier Than Ever era, she was a blonde but hasn’t gone back to the color since. Until now, that is.
On the cover, Eilish’s new shag was front and center. While chantilly and caramel blondes have hit the trend cycle this fall, the singer’s color looked like a true platinum blonde with a shadow root. Her hair rested right at shoulder length which showed off the choppy layers throughout the shag, starting with face framing curtain bangs. Her hair was either freshly washed or styled to look wet, which highlighted all the choppy layers.

To pair with the edgy style, she wore a polished, oversized corp-core suit in a pretty vanilla color with a striped tie and blue button-up layered underneath. Keeping the hair as the statement, her glam was pared-back with no mascara and a skin-like complexion. The finishing touch was her soft pink lip.
So, the age-old question persists: Is the blonde a permanent change? Only time will tell, but Eilish makes the blonde fall trend all the more official.
